Culpeper attorney D. French Slaughter apparently all but locked up the Republican nomination for the 7th Congressional District seat Tuesday night.
Slaughter won five of seven “Super Tuesday” mass meetings throughout the sprawling district, where Rep. J. Kenneth Robinson (R-Va.) of Winchester, who will retire at year’s end, has held the congressional seat for seven terms.
With 19 of 21 local mass meetings completed, unofficial tallies indicate Mr. Slaughter has 160 delegate votes, 20 short of the total he would need to win the nomination at the district convention May 12 in Charlottesville.
