But on Friday, council didn’t vote on the application.
Miller had met with local sanitarian Jack Lockhart who told him the septic field was approved because he “thought there would be less stress on the system with a bed and breakfast than with the apartments as now exist,” according to Miller. Miller added that the sanitarian had told him he “was not sure exactly what:Was down there” and didn’t think the ground in the area was quite satisfactory, “but this is okay”.
However, the council wasn’t ready to decide on the commercial/residential issue without consulting with their lawyer. Ultimately the meeting was recessed “upon recall of the mayor” to allow Miller time to get an opinion from the town’s attorney, Douglas Baumgardner.
The council postponed vote on another bed and breakfast inn for the same reason.
Main Street Bed
and Breakfast
D. Patrick Foster and his wife, Camille Harris Foster, want to operate a bed and breakfast in what’s known as “the old Byrd Updike house” on Main Street.
Harris and Foster plan to accommodate up to eight guests at a time on a short term basis. Traffic would increase primarily on the weekends, they say. They plan to have off-street parking for four and have room for two more along the road “if necessary.”
