Settle’s performance last year was not lost on Mary O’Meara, the Slate Mills resident who has captured the Rappahannock women’s title for three years. She insists she’s not trying to beat Settle, but rather is aiming to lower her own 48 minute mark of last year. “I’m planning on beating myself,” she said, adding that she’s bettered her time each Fodderstack. “I feel great but I don’t know how 111 do.”
Asked if she’s stepped up her training in preparation for the race, O’Meara laughed. “I’ve started running during the week instead of just on the weekend. That takes dedication. I have to get up .at 5:45!”
