Cystic fibrosis is not like asthma. “I do take some of the same medications, broncho-dilators, to keep my windpipes open but I don’t wheeze a lot,” Greg said. And, unlike asthma sufferers, he isn’t supposed to curtail physical activity. “In fact, it’s just the opposite. Physical activity is a must for CF patients. It keeps things going inside and loosens the stuff up. It’s really detrimental for someone with CF to just sit around all day.”
The type of exercise is left up to the individual. “There’s no set regimen because the symptoms of the disease can be so varied,” Greg explained. He’s a golfer, quick to point out that the sport provides much more exercise than most people realize. “Especially if you’re walking around a hilly course. And swinging dubs is good for chest mobility,” he added. In addition, Greg lifts weights, another sport that gives chest muscles a brisk work-out.
