The stints in a hospital bed made it difficult for Greg to keep up with his studies at UVa. Currently, he’s been granted absentee status and is taking make-up courses at Piedmont Community College in Charlottesville. But he wants to return full time to major in biology, if not at UVa, then another four-year school.
Greg’s plans for his education are typical of his attitude towards a life lived in the shadow of a terminal illness. He doesn’t seem to see the shadow at all. At 21, he’s already passed the 20 year average life expectancy for young people with cystic fibrosis. And he’s looking forward to next year. He had hoped to be at the county park for the Walk-A-Thon to take part in the hike around the exercise trail and through the town of Washington. Unfortuately, the date coincides with a field trip for his forestry class and the instructor doesn’t look kindly on class cuts. “But I’ll be here for next year’s,” he promised. “I’m more worried about getting through school than the darker side of tnis disease.”
