One evening in York, the visiting Virginians Lee and I were among dined with ceremony at the York mansion house, the home of the Lord Mayor of the city. Much of the ceremony consisted of the assistant butler smacking sharply a wooden hammer on a wooden circular base he carries. The loud noise the smacking makes shuts everyone up. The but-ler then announces, “Dinner is served”, or “My Lord Mayor will now propose a toast”, or whatever else he has been prompted - all written out on cards - to say.
