The English had another Easter saying as well: “At Easter let your clothes be new, or else be sure you will it rue,” believing that new clothes for the holiday brought good luck for the rest of the year.
And one final Easter saying from farmers who watched the sky: “Rain on Easter Day means grass but little hay.”
Bulgarians in Sofia gather shortly before midnight, the traditional hour of the Resurrection, for a procession of choirs, laymen and church dignitaries who follow the archbishop from the cathedral to the city’s square. Thousands of worshippers, each with an unlit candle, wait until the bells sound at midnight and the archbishop delivers his traditional blessing, proclaiming “Hristos vosskresse” (Christ is risen). Then immediately the dark square is illuminated by thousands of candles and people greet their neighbors with “Hristos vosstresse” (He is risen indeed.) The candles are reverently carried home and placed beside ikons as protection against storm, disease or the evil eye.
In Finnland on Easter morning, the boys and girls spank one another with pussy willow or birch switches until they receive rewards of Easter eggs.
Young people in Yugoslavia have a favorite Easter sport, tutsanye. They crack their Easter eggs against those of friendsand the possessor of the stronger egg collects the damaged ones of their opponents.
