The Town Council has been working intermittently on the project for over a year, attempting to establish official boundaries for the town that can be submitted to the General Assembly for approval.
But the question of Washington’s limits goes back almost two centuries. In 1796, the General Assembly set aside 25 acres for the town, directing it be divided into Vi acre lots. Then when the town was incorporated in 1894, the Assembly extended the boundary an additional 300 yards in all directions.
