What has happened in England has not been without problems and mistakes. With so much experimentation as has gone on, one could only expect something less than perfection. But the good effects on England of the Town and Country Planning Act are visible everywhere. Lee and I had traveled there and even gone to York some years ago. I remember then saying to Lee, “They have decided here to save the land. I wonder how it is being done?” At the time, we had no way to find out and it was owing to our curiosity on this point that we lept at the opportunity to join the study group composed primarily of persons from Loudoun and Fauquier Counties.
A recent article in News Week discusses at length the decline of Europe. My view is that the underlying assumptions of the article are erroneous and that Europe is not declining, any more than any other place on the globe. Certainly any decisions that the British make to keep their society up to date will be immeasurably eased owing to the work done within that society over the last 40 years.
England is a country for people, not primarily automobiles and business speculators. The economic problems they have we too have. We came away feeling that if we have much to teach Britain, we have as much or more to learn.
