cent of Virginians now living will eventually have cancer. An estimated 17,500 will develop the disease in the coming year and 9,100 will die from it in 1964. Three out of four Virginia families will have a member affected by cancer. Cancer will loll more children, ages three to 14, in the Commonwealth this year than any other disease. Finally, it is estimated that the state will lose more than $300,000,000 in productivity this year as a result of cancer among its citizens.
However, there’s another, more hopeful side of the picture. Thanks at least in piut to the work of the Cancer Society, there are 56,800 former cancer patients in Virginia who are alive, cured of the disease. Of the estimated 33,560 now under medical care, approximately 6,278 will be saved from cancer in 1984 alone.
