Library Gels $ 1,050 Grant
The Rappahannock County Library recently was awarded a grant from the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities and Public Policy to conduct a aeries of lectures and discussions on four contemporary novels.
The $1,050 grant, which matches donations from the Rappahannock community, will finance lecture fees, travel costs and promotion of the series, to begin September 10 and continue September 17, 25, and October 1 and 8.
The four novels have been chosen to follow the theme: “The Ties that Bind - Relationships in Fiction.”
Diana Bird, project director, said the relationships discussed in the novels would include both family and the larger community.
The novels are: Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant, by Anne Tyler; The Color Purple, by Alice Walker; The Second Coming, by Walker Percy; A Mother and Two Daughters, by Gail Godwin. Discussions will be led by regional experts.
The grant enables the library to offer the series free of charge. In addition, said Bird, the first 20 people to register may purchase the books at half price.

• Park Service Seeks Volunteers
Shenandoah National Park still is seeking volunteers, according to Karen Wade, volunteer coordinator for the park. Wade said, “Volunteers have become an integral part of how the Park Service does business.”
In Shenandoah, more than 10,000 hours were contributed by volunteers last year.
