By running on the national ticket and presumably projecting a moderate image, she may help dilute the association of women with automatic liberalism in the public mind.
The second way she will help is simply by getting the Virginia electorate used to the idea of a woman running as a serious candidate for high public office.
Virginia voters are not noted for their ready acceptance of political change, and Terry would be the first woman candidate for one of the three top in-state posts.
Had Terry’s only predecessor as a major candidate been Harrison, the voters may have seen her senate race as a sort of aberration, and not the kind of thing that is a real precedent setter. (Virginians set great store on whether or not something has been done before.)
But with a woman vice presidential candidate, well, that’s something else again even if they don’t vote for her. New ground will have genuinely been broken. , ~ Thus events in San Francisco'1 this week may not only perk' up the Democratic presidential race this fall, but they will be weighed to the last critical ounce by both analysts and political hopefuls of all persuasions in the Old Dominion in the year ahead.
