Ferraro, however, injects a new factor into the presidential race. She was clearly chosen by Mondale not only because she is a woman, but because she adds a degree of philosophical balance to what might have been a super-liberal ticket. To be sure, again by Virginia standards, Ferraro is a liberal, but then by Virginia standards almost anyone is a liberal who takes the Constitution literally.
In point of fact, Ferraro is a tough-minded former prosecutor who, of all things, represented the district in New York in which the TV character Archie Bunker was supposed to have lived. It is not exactly a left-wing neighborhood.
Strategists laying the groundwork for Terry’s campaign might well have been concerned that by running in 1985 on the heels of Harrison’s campaign this year, Terry might become associated in the public’s perception with Harrison’s more liberal views. This is known to have been one of their worries. They feared that large segments of the electorate would, however unconsciously, associate a woman candidate with liberal politics.
