People have a tendency to protect, ignore, cover-up, and in general also deny the basic problem. People in the business of helping alcoholics call these protectors “Enablers.” They allow the drinker to keep denying that there is a problem.
The first thing I learned working in the field of alcoholism, full-time and part-time for 13 years, is to look that person in the eye and say, “You have a problem; that problem is booze. Sure, everyone drinks but you get drunk.” He then is aware that somebody knows. ^
Printing the name in bold print tells the drinker that “Everybody knows.” He (or she) may not make a change today or next week, but it is a start in their thinking that denial just won’t work anymore.
In helping the problem drinker you have served the public.
