Sharon said that the mockingbird, who eats the same food as the bluebird, often dominates the limited berries in the winter. “Winter is very difficult for the bluebird. He lives on poison ivy berries, holly and pyracantha. I’m afraid that in this climate, very many of them simply do not make it through the winter.”
Peanut hearts and stewed apples are recommended for supplemental winter feed for bluebirds. “I’ve never been able to make them take any kind of food,” Sharon said. They seem to prefer to starve.”
