On a grassy knoll partly hidden by the woods half-way up Red Oak Mountain live Puff, Pepper, Bentley, Peaches, Faithful and Feisty. They spend their days gathering food, taking care of their children and singing among the flowering peach, cherry and dogwood trees. Watching over them from a spot higher on the hill are two huge blue-eyed huskies.
This is Dogwood Hill, a private bird sanctuary fashioned by Sharon Walbridge. Puff, Pepper, Bentley and Peaches are chickadees: Faithful and Feisty are hummingbirds. These birds, native to our Rappahannock woodland, have been encouraged by Sharon to return year after year to her yard and woods, even to her house.
