The question of whether or not fairy tales should be presented on film rises from the fact that historically the stories were an oral tradition.
Mr. Davenport, however, believes the approach is valid. “Some people say that fairy tales should just be told as stories, but we don’t have the same story tradition these days as when fairy tales were a vital part of the oral folk culture.”
In “Hansel and Gretel,” Mr. Davenport took the traditional tale and went one step further in linking it to the pasts of those who would view it— he placed it in an Appalachian setting during the yean of the Depression.
