Soon, Sharon recalls, the female would appear at her window whenever she wanted a drink of nectar. After a while her young son came with her. “Soon he wouldn’t even wait for me to come outside,” she said. “He’d fly right in the door and wait at the sink for me to fill the feeder. ” *
Sharon said that the hummingbtfi feeding routine was more demanding than that of a new baby. “They e*frthey must eat-every hour. Actual^, they prefer to eat every twenty mm utes or so. Since they had become « pendent on me, I had to be there. Ilf had to go out I’d race out and retuta within Hie hour. But I knew I’d nevfef have this experience again.”
Hummingbirds only spend five months here. In the winter, they go to South America. “Can you imagine,” asked Sharon, “them crossing the Atlantic with their tiny wings? And of course, they don’t have food all that time and nowhere to light or sleep. I’m sure that many of them just don’t make it.”
What about her mother and son? “Well I haven’t seen them yet,” she said sadly. “But we still have hope.”
