Far from finished, Wickery may be saving her best for last. This year, she placed second at the Old Dominion 100 and first in the Wide Bar Pennsylvania ride June 30.
What pushes these horses and riders onward? According to Cynthia Warner, who helped organize the July 4 event at Avon Hall, Arabs earn their place in the family.
“(Arabs) are one of the most involved family friends,” Warner said. “They are what our family calls ‘our puppy horses.’ ”
One rider, Betty Lenz of Marshall, Va., who directed the show, says the love of her Arab stallion Gazroc is therapeutic.
Lenz’s bout with cancer—operations, chemotherapy, and more operations—caused the horsewoman considerable anguish and discouragement.
When most depressed, she would “go to the bam to commune with ‘Roc.’ ” The only time she felt “right,” she said, was when the Roc was right there helping her along.
Roc now is arthritic and was considered at the end of his great career in 1981. Still, with companion Lenz, the show goes on, even if it must go on at a slower pace.
