Anti-abortion activists picketed outside Fairfax Hospital and Richmond Memorial Hospit.il on Saturday, and 150 others staged an organized march past facilities in Fairfax County where abortions are performed.
The sister demonstrations, part of a nationwide protest organized by the Christian Action Council, were designed to force hospitals to change their policies and stop doing abortions.
About 30 people began picketing across from the main entrance of Fairfax Hospital at 10 a.m., distributing anti-abortion literature and waving signs proclaiming “Stop abortions” and “The hospital is killing babies,” hospital spokesman Lon Walls said.
Guard unit reactivated
FORT BELVOIR — Army Secretary John 0. Marsh Jr. joined Maryland and Virginia’s governors Saturday to mark the reactivation of an Army National Guard division that participated in the D-day invasion of Normandy during World War II.
The 29th, which was deactivated 17 years ago, has been reorganized with 10,600 reservists from Maryland and Virginia. It is the only National Guard light infantry division of the Army.
President Reagan sent a letter saying the division “epitomizes the longstanding American tradition of citizen soldiers, and continues to be a vital element in the defense of our nation. ”
A crowd of about 5,000 attended the ceremony marking the division’s reactiviation.
“You are part of the greatest Army in the world,” Marsh told the crowd. “It has kept the nation free. It is hope for a troubled world.”
Also present were Virginia Gov. Charles Robb, Maryland Gov. Harry Hughes and Sen. John Warner, R-Va.
The new division is headquartered at Fort Belvoir and under the command of Maj. Gen. James A. Baber III of Richmond.
The blue and gray colors of the division hark back to the Civil War, when Virginia became a part of the Confederacy and Maryland remained in the federal Union.
The division was dispersed in 1968 after 51 years of sevice, including combat in both world wars.
