“We were told that the only way not to destroy any part ol' the building would be to build on the back," Sims said. “Going to the sides is not good for the building, and we would need more staff for supervision."

The rear addition would provide 840 square feet .more space, bringing the total to 2,524 square te'-t,

BZA member, Charles E hired, asked Sims if the feasibility committee had asked about the poesi uun of moving the library’s septic field. Sims said that Jack Lockhart had told her that the septic field could not be moved since it would be too close to a well on The Inn's property.

“You could talk to Patnck and Reinhardt (The Inn’s owners) about filling in the well since they’re on the town water system,’’ Eldred said “Then you could move the seytjig field and build without needing a variance.”

Virginia Lindstrorn, a Washington resident, had previously favored no additions to the present library building because of its historical and architectural significance. At (he BZA meeting, she favored-plans to add on to the south side of t he building.

“We could see about m wing the drain field and filling in the w-k." Lindstrorn said. “An addi* m would be more attractive on tin side."

Sims said that any side addition could only be connected through one door, which would mean that mere staff would be needed in the library “The plans for rear expansion would mean that we would be able to oversee the library with our one or two staff people since there would be a straight line of vision,” Sims said.

Dean Morehouse, BZA member, suggested that the variance request be deferred while more information is being gathered.
