Republican Jack Rollison III of Woodbridge are seeking the seat being vacated by retiring Democrat Floyd Bagley of Dumfries.
There will be a three-way race in the 59th District to replace Del. Claude Anderson, chairman of the House Privileges and Elections Committee, who was defeated in last summer’s primary. The three are Democrat Watkins M. Abbitt Jr. of Appomattox, Republican James P. McClellan of Cumberland and independent Clyde Mayberry of Appomattox.
Democrat Kenneth R. Melvin of Portsmouth’s 80th District defeated incumbent Del. L. Cleaves Manning in the summer Primary. He is unopposed and thus the House Black Caucus is assured one new member next year. In the 82nd District, GOP Del. Buster O’Brien also is bowing out to run for attorney general. Democrat Dean Lee and Republican Bob Purkey, both of Virginia Beach, are battling to fill that vacancy.
There are other contests which could go either way. Both parties seem to agree that the outcome of the following may be some of the hardest to predict.
