One is the fight in the 10th between Democrat Roscoe Reynolds and Republican Harry Copenhaver for the Mary Sue Terry vacancy.
Spokespersons for both parties were surprisingly modest in their expectations. A Republican staffer put the party’s gains at “one or two” while a Democratic counterpart ventured as high as “four or five” with a healthy dollop of good luck in a “best case” scenario.
Oddly, neither party seemed to tie the House races to the outcome of the statewide races.
Maybe they were concentrating too closely on the matter at hand.
Or maybe they remember that in 1981 the Democrats swept the governorship, the lieutenant governorship and the attorney general elections with relative ease, but something funny happened in the House races which also took place that year.
In those the Democrats lost eight seats to the Republicans for their worst General Assembly shellacking in modem Virginia history!
