In the races tor the 1UU delegate seats there will be 79 Democrats, 59 Republicans and five independents in the running statewide. These numbers, of course, include both incumbents and challengers. According to the state GOP headquarters, this is the largest number of hopefuls the party has fielded in the House of Delegates sweepstakes.
Of the 65-member Democratic majority, 39 are unopposed, and of the 34-member Republican minority, 18 will have no opposition. Thus 57, or more than half the nominees will have free rides to election.
There will be five open seats this year, several of them representing the loss, by resignation or defeat, of some of the most powerful members of the House.
In the 10th District Democratic Del. Mary Sue Terry is stepping down to run for attorney general. Democrat W. Roscoe Reynolds and Republican Harry Copenhaver, both of Martinsville, are contending for the open spot.
