The racehas grown from 137 runners in 1979 to several hundred in recent years and the organizational responsibilities have grown as well, Mrs. Brown said. As the runners braved the bitter chill of winter slogging out their training miles, the race committee was busy calling running publications to ensure the Fodderstack was included in their race calanders. Magazines as far away as California were contacted to attract as many participants as possible. Newspapers and radio stations in a wide area als received information to publicize the upcoming event.
Sponsors had to be solicited for everything from runners’ numbers to refreshments and trophies. The list of sponsors ranges from local businesses and individuals such as Eileen Day Realty, Washington Video Rentals, Sperryville Realty, Harris Hollow Fruit and Produce, Roger Batchelder, Bill Lyne, Peter and Sharon Luke, Washington Cash Store and Brambes Cafe to corporate donors including Coca-Cola and Pepsi.
