way onto the course and decided to join the race.
Rescue squads from Flint Hill, Washington and Sperryville all provide equipment and volunteers to staff first aid stations along the course and at the finish. The highway department lends flags and vests for the course marshals, as well as water coolers for the water stations.
Many other details ranging from volunteers who work at the water stations and call “split” times to busses and drivers who ferry runners to the start require the attention of the directors. The Cub Scouts collect trash after the race, and many local people help out by donating their time on race day to ensure the event runs smoothly.
Several other activities have sprung up around the Fodderstack race. The Washington Baptist Church will hold its Spring Event, where there will be a flea market, a pet show, a tug-of-war between local fire companies and blood pressure checks by the American Heart Assocation. Any organizations or individuals who wish to volunteer to assist with the race or participate in the Fodderstack Day festivities should contact Betsy Murray at 675-3621 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays or Sandra Brown at 987-8758 evenings.
Mrs. Brown added the hard work is worthwhile because the runners enjoy the race and “they’re really nice people.”
Asked whether she has had any regets during her four years as a member of the race committee, she thought a moment, smiled and said: “Just one ... I don’t get to run the race.”
