He simply takes a 55-gallon drum, buries it in the ground vertically, puts his potatoes in it and covers it with a board. Since the ground stays above freezing in the winter and is cool in the summer it provides a perfect storage place for his potatoes. This method also works well for onions and turnips.
When do you plant potatoes? As explained by Loring, “Potatoes are the first to be planted usually after the last hard frost. When I plant my potatoes I also plant my peas and beans, I put out a few tomatoes and some onion sets.”
