suited for encouraging each other, or discouraging pests and animals. These are “companion” and “antagonist” plants. The Abells tried two companions last year — corn and cucumbers — and found that the cucumbers kept the raccoons from the com.

“They don’t like to come through those prickly vines,” said Richard. This year the Abells will try other companions (see box).

The Abells recommend that new gardeners take the time to study and learn before planting their first seed. And their beautiful little farm, with its neat strips of meadow, vegetable garden and berry patch, the driveway lined with small filbert trees on one side and grape vines on the other, has something to teach even the most experienced gardener, if he, like Richard Abell after 50 years of gardening, is still learning and watching.
