According to Humane Society officer Patricia Saltonstall, Rappahannock is one of the last two counties in Virginia without an animal shelter that meets state standards.
To eliminate that dubious distinction, Humane Society President Vince Hannon asked the Board of Supervisors to decide if the proposed site at the old. Scrabble cchool will be used for a new dog pound.
In a letter dated March 24, Mr. Hannon noted that completion of an animal shelter hadi been promised by the fall of 1985. Pointing out that considerable funds (more than $4,000, according to the supervisors), already have been invested at Scrabble, he strongly recommended the county build its facility there despite opposition from neighboring landowners — on county property “suitable in every respect.”
Mr. Hannon acknowledged that an unidentified person has volunteered to sell land for an alternative location, but he noted that similar opposition from adjoining property holders can be expected there as well.
