Burn with care Many of us are out attacking gardens, hedgerows and fields these days. It’s time to work with nature to make things look a bit better. That means people will pile up lots of brush and debris they want to burn. Fortunately, our lawmakers understand that. They also understand the dangers of open fires during a windy and dry season. Remember all those brush fires last spring? Well, it’s happening again. To control the danger, the state burning law took effect last month. It stipulates that: • Open fires burn only between 4 p.m. and midnight. • Fires must be attended at all times. • Proper tools must be hand to contain fires. • Fires must be kept away from forests. Local authorities fined quite a few people last spring for illegal burning. Our volunteer firemen spend in inordinate amount of time and money fighting out-of-control blazes born of stupidity. Let’s obey the law and burn our brush safely this spring.
