After a three-year wait, work will begin Friday on renovation of the county courthouse, as requested by Rappahannock’s General District and Circuit Court judges.
The judges, who under Virginia law are enpowered to order local government to provide acceptable court accommodations, asked in 1983 for installation of central air conditioning and carpeting and alterations to the courtroom ceiling to improve acoustics. They also wanted a soundproofed jury room and changes in the courtroom layout, including a raised judge’s bench with greater distance between it and the witness seat, designed to upgrade security.
