the race’s tradition. This year, as for several previous years, the 66 handmade trophies are done by local potter Jeanne Drevas. June Jordan, another local artisan, has designed and craftetj the awards for previous Fodderstack Races.
Twenty-two categories are included in the awards, ranging from the Eva L. Smith Memorial Award for the first male and female finishers from Rappahannock County, to trophies for expectant mothers, senior citizens and walkers.
As the date of the race approaches the Recreation Authority directors and other volunteers, including Irving Kenyon, Diane Bruce and Jean Lillard, must contact agencies ranging from the Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation to the Washington Town Council to obtain permission to hold the race.
Advertisements and entry forms are mailed and posted at local businesses and area sports stores. Local runners including Frank Reynolds and Phillip Strange provide the race copmmittee with ideas and encouragement based on their racing experience.
Indeed, all the amenities which the runners expect as a matter of course result from many hours of careful planning. Course safety is coordinated with the Rappahannock County Sheriffs Department and the State Police, who provide traffic control at the start, finish and during the race.
Although Sheriff John Henry Woodward said the work of the department is “nothing out of the ordinary, just part of our service to the community,” several years ago his men were called upon to round up and return to its pasture an errant horse which had found its
