They have planted hundreds of raspberry canes, using Heritage, the everbearing red raspberry. “These bear on new canes every summer,” Richard said. “So instead of constantly pruning canes, we only need to mow the old cane when it’s finished bearing.”
They put the canes in seaweed water after they’re shipped. Then they carry a fewT plants at a time to be planted and doused again with a drink of seaweed and water.
“This wray, the canes never dry out,” said Richard. The raspberries do well in this climate and soil, and they get a summer layer of mulch and a feeding of compost. Last year, the Abells froze 100 pints from one row of Heritage.
