Fresh chive and fresh parsley add a subtle flavor to soups and salads and the home vegetable gardener can continue to grow these to be available fresh through the fall and winter.

“If the gardener has a sunny window location, chive and parsley, as well as some small-fruited tomatoes and peppers, can be grown through the winter,” said Virginia Tech specialist Diane Relf.

The gardener needs pots or buckets six inches in diameter and larger and a fertile soil mixture with a high humus content. Each pot needs to have good drainage. It is recommended to place crushed stone and broken crockery or gravel in the bottom of each pot.
