Arlene Keithley, owner of Old Hollow Grocery, has donated a 14x18 oil painting which is on display at the store. It will be given away on April 20.

Magazine gets
‘Superior’ rating

Wakefield School’s literary magazine Talisman has been awarded a “Superior” rating by SIPA, the Southern Interscholastic Press Association. Results of the annual competition were announced at the annual SIPA convention held recently in Columbia, S. C.
SIPA is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to encourage a high degree of professionalism in scholastic journalism mass communications. SIPA is sponsored by the College of Journalism at the University of South Carolina.
Judges in the contest are outstanding teachers, advisers, and professionals who critique each entry, providing constructive criticism of the publications .
Talisman has been published by the students of Wakefield School since 1980. The 1985 edition, in addition to the award from SIPA, received a first place rating from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association, a division of Columbia Umversity. \
The editor of the 1985 Talisman was Josephine Rood of Sperryville. Rood was assisted by Lauren Wemmer of Front Royal and Kathleen Fawcett of Warrenton.
Students are gearing up for the production of the 1986 edition of Talisman. The editor, Mary Beth Bayne of Warrenton, will be assisted by Sharon McAllister of Winchester and Ann Waesche of Haymarket. Currently, the staff is reviewing prose, poetry, and essay materials that have been submitted.
In preparing the 1986 edition, the students are referring to the suggestions offered by the judges, making changes and additions that they hope will improve Talisman.
