According to Mr. Hannon’s letter, the local Humane Society held an educational meeting in February with pound neighbors and operators from Madison and Culpeper counties on hand to tell of their experiences and answer questions. Supervisors Hubert Gilkey and Nelson Lane attended, but not a single person who had objected to the shelter at the public hearing on the Scrabble site showed up, Mr. Hannon noted.
In asking that the board “make up its collective mind and move on,” Mr. Hannon informed the supervisors of legislation (passed in the last General Assembly session and now awaiting the governor’s signature) that requires all animal control officers to be trained, effective July 1. He said that mandate, which the state will fund, was endorsed by Virginia Tech and the Virginia Federation of Humane Societies.
