Scoring four runs in the first inning and five in the second, the Rappahannock Varsity baseball team won its opening game March 26 at Blue Ridge, 14-4.
Co-captain Tommy Jenkins led the Panthers on the mound and at the plate. The 6’4‘ senior struck out seven in five innings, and gave up six hits. At the plate, Jenkins was 3 for 4; his sixth-inning tag was a towering homerun over the left field fence.
The Panthers were powerful at the plate, stroking 12 hits, five of them doubles. Senior co-captain Chucky Jenkins was 2 for 3 with one double; senior centerfielder Rob Brown hit two doubles; senior third baseman Craig Williams and sophomore second baseman Greg Smith also posted doubles.
Rounding out the hits with singles, were freshman shortstop Doug Smith and Tommy Jenkins with two apiece; senior rightfielder H. B. Wood and Chucky Jenkins each with one.
“We hit the ball, ran the bases well, and made minimal mistakes in the field,” Panther coach Jon Heddleston said. “For a first game, the team play was exceptional.” During the contest the Panthers stole 18 bases.
