$10,000 lottery winner
The county had its first big winner in the state's new $10,000 lottery game last Sunday evening. Eddie Wayland stopped by Hillsdale Grocery for cigarettes and bought three lottery tickets too. One of the tickets won him $10,000. According to Hillsdale's owner, Jerry Foster, Mr. Wayland was “really excited." And, so was Mr. Foster. “I feel very good about it," he said. The $10,000 ticket brings to $21,000 the number of big ticket vyinners sold by Hillsdale since the lottery started in September. Mr. Foster said that lottery officials told him they have no record of another outlet selling that many large winning tickets.
Mild winter predicted
After collecting more than 250 woolly bear caterpillars, the Hagerstown Almanack has released its prediction of the coming winter. According to folk wisdom the caterpillars, which have three bands of varying colors, are accurate predictors of the winter's severity. For the first half of the winter, the almanac predicts, the temperature and snowfall will be average. During February and March, temperatures will be above average and very little snow will fall. The woolly bears' prediction, the almanac added, is close to its own prediction of 38 inches of snow and average temperatures.
