I said not exactly because that sort of depends on who you talk to. Recycling always was a great idea, but now the economics and the politics are right for it. Markets for secondary materials are developing, and recycling is now looked upon as a legitimate business option. The cost of waste disposal by traditional methods has escalated to the point that previously indifferent local officials all over are positively enthused about this new way to trim the budget.
But even before then, it was right. Making paper and cans and bottles with recycled materials saves energy, is cheaper and reduces manufacturing pollution. It . __ conserves natural resources, like trees. And now, we can begin to recycle some plastic (HDPE or high density polyethylene) here in Rappahannock, It’s fascinating. HDPE is now recycled to make flower pots, drainage pipe, plastic lumber and bins for curbside recycling among other things.
The more you get into trash, the more potential there is. That’s why it’s hard to understand the jokes and negative reactions, even from family •* members. A friend of mine who is an expert on what to do with garbage ' — she’s been to Eurofie tb study their systems and written reports, everything — was actually asked on a D. C. radio talk show, “What’s a nice girl like you doing mixed up with garbage?” They just don’t understand.
Actually, now I’m into preventing trash. Read on. “Recycling” is the term we use most often for a better way to handle our trash than burying it or burning it. But recycling is itself part of a larger effort to deal with solid waste, called waste minimization or waste reduction.
Waste minimization includes strategies for prevention and recovery of waste materials, and works in three ways with the vast continuum of garbage that we who are hip ■ about‘ these things refer to, somewhat poetically, as the waste stream:
1) source reduction (or waste prevention): eliminating the production or creation of wastes at the front end; 2) making the waste stream more recyclable, or in some cases, biodegradable; 3) recycling, ; reusing, repairing and composting : wastes.
Thus the ardent individual, frustrated about the course of world events and the megaproblems facing the planet, can seize the reins of destiny and have a real impact on the environment by doing such things as follow herewith:
