books with cassette tapes so children can hear as well as read a story. “If parents don’t have time to sit dowm to read to their children, parents can play the tape or ask the babysitter to play it.” Prof. Sycamore noted most children’s books today are moving away from stereotypical female characters such as princesses and focusing on adventure stories with both male and female role models.
Ironically, some TV viewing for children learning to read may be beneficial, Prof. Sycamore says, because television can teach children new words. “Kids who watch TV often learn words faster,” he says. Today some children begin kindergarten with a vocabulary of 10,000 words, double the number of words the average 5 year old used to master, he says.
A library card for children also can encourage reading, he says, because they check out all kinds of books. “Textbooks in schools have what’s known as controlled vocabulary, or words that are repeated to teach phonics or sounds of letters, and those can be boring to a child.” Selecting books that include not only interesting pictures, but also intriguing story lines, can spark a child’s life-long interest in reading, says Prof. Sycamore.
