portation board, which has not yet ruled on the question of when the truck ban will be lifted, he reminded the supervisors. “We can’t assume they’re going to do the right thing and open it back up (when the Route 17 work is done).”
Unfortunately, politics may play a part in this decision, he added, and in any political considerations, Rappahannock has less sway than Fauquier County, which has at least five times as many voters.
“When Route 17 (to 1-66) is opened to traffic, it should be opened to trucks,” said supervisor Charles Estes. “That’s what we should push for.”
By unanimous vote, the board adopted a resolution which contends that doing otherwise would be a “breach of faith” with the citizens of Rappahannock who have faced serious safety threats from increased tractor trailer traffic on Route 522. The resolution notes that only 3.6 miles of the highway’s 27.8-mile stretch in Rappahannock is dual-laned and that the narrow, two-lane road passes through six residential communities within the county’s boundaries.
