“They have a lot of votes and a lot of loud voices in Fauquier, so we’ve got to speak all the louder to be heard," maintained county administrator John McCarthy, as Rappahannock’s board of supervisors adopted on Monday a strongly-worded resolution calling for the reopening of Route 17 to tractor trailers as soon as improvements to the eight-mile section of highway between Warrenton and Interstate 66 is completed. \
Following a series of accidents and fatalities, Route 17 in Fauquier County was closed to big trucks in November 1984. The action brought more tractor trailers onto Route 522 in Rappahannock County, as drivers who formerly used Route 17 detoured over the mountains at Chester Gap, down the winding, two-lane to Route 211 at Massie’s Comer and from there to Warrenton or Culpeper.
With the increased truck traffic came increased accidents and fatalities in Rappahannock County, prompting the supervisors here to petition for a similar closure of Route 522. But what was afforded in the interests of safety to Fauquier County by the transportation board was denied to Rappahannock.
