The pulp or meat of the pumpkin has been a source of food for many cultures. Nearly all the Indian tribes who befriended the Pilgrims planted pumpkins in their plats and cornfields. The settlers learned from the Indians how to bake, boil and fry the pulp, how to stew it with beans, peas and corn and how to make coarse pumpkin bread by adding commeal.
