Organized by the Physics Department at the University of Virginia, the Institute was sponsored by the Center for the Liberal Arts. Attendees received a stipend, as well as room and board. The program was designed by a workshop of high school physics teachers held at the University in the summer of 1986.
Activities at the Institute included lectures, laboratory tours, panel discussions, research affiliations, and computer use. Teachers satisfactorily completing a series of assignments received three hours of graduate credit.
