“We have to submit an annual report on the progress we’ve made toward all their suggestions, and every three years we must go through the whole self-study and observation again,” Mrs. Flinchum said.
With most of (’CLC’s classes already at or near capacity, why spend the time and energy on accreditation?
“We’re working on a developmentally appropriate program for preschool children. It’s not an academic program,” Mrs. Flinchum explained. “We’re getting children ready for what they will be doing in kindergarten. But we are not doing the same work they’ll be doing then.”
Take reading readiness as an example. At CCLC, it means reading to children, exposing them to books in a way that makes them eager to read. It does not mean memorizing the alphabet song. Children aren’t expected to learn by rote but rather to work with creative ideas and work cooperatively with each other, she noted.
