Across the Commonwealth, 56 percent of voters backed the pari-mutuel referendum. Most of the opposition to the question came.in the traditionally more conservative southwestern part of the state, where opponents outpolled supporters.
Virginia becomes the 42nd state to approve parimutuel wagering. Twenty-seven of those states actually have race tracks.
The referendum, however, merely creates a state racing commission and makes it legal for localities to consider racing ventures. Each city, town or county must still vote to approve any proposal for a race track in a specific place.
Congressman D. French Slaughter Jr., who was unopposed in his bid for a third term in the U.S. Congress, received 1,835 votes across the county.
