What To Do
Considering the negative impacts on the environment, avoid buying things in plastic containers whenever possible. If you know you can recycle it, okay, maybe. Most plastic packaging is designed to be thrown away and becomes litter, takes up valuable landfill space or releases toxic gases when incinerated. Something else to think about: five of the top six chemicals whose production generates the most total hazardous waste, says an EPA study, are chemicals commonly used by the plastics industry. (We call that a front-end problem.)
Try even harder not to buy or use foam plastics like styrofoam. The now well-known chlorofluorocarbons used in most of this product is killing off the ozone layer — which we are going to miss very much if it goes.
