Mr. White said that Mr. Slaughter “is running well ahead of our projections, and well ahead of his finishes in 1984 and 1986.” Mr. White said his estimate had the Culpeper native receiving 33 percent more votes than he polled in 1984, and better than 100 percent above the total he received in 1986 when he was also unopposed for reelection.
“We are very pleased with the partial results so far,” Mr. White said Wednesday morning. “In an uncontested race, many people often don’t bother to vote." He called the results a vote of confidence by 7th District residents in the representation provided by Mr. Slaughter.
In Maryland, voters overwhelmingly favored a proposal which would require handguns to be approved by a state board before being sold in the state. The National Rifle Association was the chief opponent of the measure, and spearheaded a $4 million campaign to defeat the law. Voters approved the measure, 58 to 42 percent.
