(Rainey, Culley win Geo Bee
The first rounds of the second annual National Geography Bee were held recently at schools across the country, including Rappahannock Elementary and Wakefield. At RCES, sixth grader Jennings Carney was the winner, while at Wakefield eighth-grader Oliver Culley bested his schoolmates with his knowledge of geography. The next round involves a written test for all school winners, and the top 100 scorers in that competition will advance to the state competition in Richmond on March 30. The winner of that round travels to Washington, D.C. for the finals in May, and a chance at the first prifce of a $25,000 college scholarship. The * contest is sponsored by the National Geography Society to promote the study of geography among students.
