Rappahannock’s Panthers wind up their basketball season before a home crowd on Friday night, facing the Manassas Park Cougars.
The game will also mark Parents’ Night for the Panthers, when the team members’ parents will join them at halftime for a recognition ceremony.
Rappahannock is fighting a seesaw finish to their season, which started strong but has sagged in the wake of three consecutive close losses, including two one-point defeats to district-champion Central last Wednesday and Strasburg last Friday.
The Panthers bounced back, however, to defeat George Mason in Fairfax Tuesday night, 49-33. , Q
Coach Gary Leake, in interviews following last week’s losses, that his team’s efforts have lacked the intensity displayed during the first half of the season. “I believe we have a trait of falling behind and getting in a hole early. We can’t continue to rely on fighting back,” the veteran coach told the Northern Virginia Daily.
The team’s offense has been consistent, Coach Leake continued, with a balanced offense still one of the team’s strongest points. Against Central, Julian Groves scored a season-high 24 points while snaring 12 rebounds off the defensive boards. Paul Hitt collected 11 points, while Benji Roy added another 10.
